Is the Windsor-Detroit border open right now?
Yes. As of 11:10 PM ET, CBP lists all three Windsor-Detroit crossings as open: the Gordie Howe Bridge, the Ambassador Bridge and the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel. All three run 24 hours a day. The Tunnel closes only for planned events, such as the Detroit Free Press Marathon each October.
How long is the border wait right now?
The current wait at the Gordie Howe Bridge, Ambassador Bridge and Detroit-Windsor Tunnel is shown in the cards at the top of this page, in both directions, updated every few minutes from CBP and CBSA with driver reports blended in.
How long does it take to cross the border from Windsor to Detroit?
Driving across takes 2 to 5 minutes depending on the crossing. Your total time is that plus the border wait shown for your direction and a minute or two at the customs booth.
How often do the wait times update?
Ambassador Bridge and Gordie Howe U.S.-bound data comes from CBP and typically refreshes every few minutes. Detroit-Windsor Tunnel and Canada-bound data comes from CBSA and can lag 30–90 minutes behind real time — we flag it as delayed when that happens. Community-reported times update as soon as a driver submits one.
What is the Border Times estimate?
It’s our own blended number that combines the official government figure with recent driver-submitted reports, weighted by how many people reported and how consistent those reports are. The accuracy badge next to it shows how much of that blend comes from community data versus official data.

The official numbers shown come directly from CBP’s Border Wait Times feed and CBSA’s Border Wait Times feed. This site is an independent project, not affiliated with CBP, CBSA, or the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority — always confirm with official sources before you travel if timing matters.

How far is Windsor from the U.S. border?
Windsor is right on it: the Detroit River is the border, and downtown Windsor faces downtown Detroit across it. The Detroit-Windsor Tunnel is about 1.6 km (5,135 ft) from portal to portal, the Ambassador Bridge about 2.3 km and the Gordie Howe Bridge about 2.5 km, so with no line the crossing itself takes minutes, plus customs.
Do I need an account to see wait times?
No. Viewing and reporting are both free and need no account. Reports are weighted by an anonymous per-device trust score and checked against the official feed. A single report shows right away if it is within 10 minutes of the official figure; otherwise it waits for a second driver to confirm it.
